Zimbabwe Flag Meaning & History

The modern flag of Zimbabwe was adopted on April 18, 1980, after regaining independence from the British Empire.

The stripes are based on the flag of the ruling political party, the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front. The green stripes represent agriculture, the yellow is for gold natural resources, the red stands for the fight for freedom, and the black represents the people of Zimbabwe.

The symbol on the left, known as the ‘Zimbabwe Bird,’ is based on several soapstone statues discovered during excavations in Great Zimbabwe. The red star behind it represents socialism and revolution.
