Czech Flag Meaning & History

The flag of the Czech Republic is the same as that of Czechoslovakia and was kept when the country was divided in 1992 into the modern Czech Republic and Slovakia. The flag was first adopted in 1920, a few years after the establishment of Czechoslovakia.

The colors red, white, and blue are pan-Slavic and are shared by several national flags of surrounding countries. Czechoslovakia had initially used a red and white flag, but since it was identical to Poland’s, a new design was sought. Archivist Jaroslav Kursa submitted a design that placed a blue triangle on the flag, which is the design we see today.
