The Navy’s Birthday celebrates the date in 1775 when the Second Continental Congress decreed the establishment of the Continental Navy. 

Earlier that year, the colony of Rhode Island requested that a fleet be established to protect the United Colonies from the British Royal Navy. Over the following months, George Washington began to build out a fleet himself, starting with the USS Hannah in Massachusetts. In October, Congress passed a resolution that two ships should be acquired and armed. In the following December, another resolution began the construction of an additional 13 frigates.

The US Navy's birthday is October 13, 1775, the date on which Congress authorized the assembly of the first continental fleet. Chief of Naval Operations Elmo Zumwalt officially designated this date as the Navy’s birthday in 1972.

The Navy League holds a ball each year for Navy servicemembers in several major US cities, including Washington, DC. Attendants include high-ranking officers of the Navy, the Secretary of Defence, and the Chiefs of Staff for the other Armed Forces branches. Each ball includes dinner, speeches, live music, and a cake-cutting ceremony.
