Adopted in 1911, California’s bear flag is one of the most striking US state flags, featuring a mighty grizzly bear in its center. The state flag of California traces its roots back to the 1846 Bear Flag Uprising when settlers in California created the Republic of California by seceding from Mexico. Soon after, California became the 31st state admitted to the Union of the United States.
