Cyprus Flag Meaning & History
The flag of Cyprus was first adopted on August 16, 1960, when Cyprus became an independent state from Great Britain. The original design showed the map of the island as an outline, which was then colored in when the flag was modified in 2006.
The map is colored copper to represent the abundance of copper ore on the island, and the background is white to represent peace. The two olive branches represent the majority groups comprising Cyprus’ population, the Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
