Gambia Flag Meaning & History

The national flag of Gambia was first adopted in 1965 when the Gambia gained complete independence from the British Empire. This design replaced the previous colonial flag, a British Blue Ensign, with the region’s coat of arms on the right.

The red stripe represents the sun and the Gambia’s proximity to the Equator. The blue is for the Gambia River, and the white lines above and below symbolize unity and peace. The green band at the bottom stands for the nation’s forests and agriculture.
