This lightweight fabric flies easily in the breeze and is quick-drying and water-resistant, making it the ideal choice for outdoor flying. The classic black, red, and yellow striped design is digitally printed using UV-resistant inks, creating rich, vibrant colors that resist fading, even when displayed in direct sunlight.

Each Germany flag comes equipped with a strong canvas header and brass grommets for simple attachment to any of our outdoor flagpoles. Our 3’ by 5’ flags are our best-selling option and an excellent fit for our popular tangle-free flagpole.

German Flag Colors, Meaning, & History

The modern flag of Germany first originated in 1778, when Heinrich XI of Reuss-Greiz chose a black, red, and gold striped flag to represent his principality. However, this flag had proportions much closer to a square than the current 3:5 ratio.

In the 1840s, the black, red, and gold colors were revived by German resistance groups fighting against Napoleon and the Conservative Order after his defeat. The modern flag was first adopted in 1848, during a short-lived attempt to unify the independent German states.

From 1867 to 1918, the North German Confederation and subsequent German Empire used a black, white, and red striped design instead. The modern flag wasn’t used again until 1919, when the Weimar Republic adopted it. The German national flag was replaced in 1933 after Hitler took control of the country and was reinstated following World War II in 1949.

The colors are derived from the Holy Roman Empire, which used a black eagle on a yellow field for the Emperor’s imperial banner. Red and white flags were flown by the Holy Roman Empire alongside the imperial banner during the Crusades, using an inverse design of England’s St. George’s Cross flag.

Belgium Flag vs German Flag

The Belgian flag is a vertical tricolor, with black, yellow, and red colors. While the colors are similar between the two flags, the German flag has a different orientation and color order.
