German Flag Colors, Meaning, & History

The black, red, and gold tricolor flag of Germany seen today was adopted in 1919 by the Weimar Republic. Until the FIFA World Cup 2006 took place in Germany, flag-flying wasn’t popular because of the widespread use of flags by the National Socialist German Workers' Party. When the 2014 World Cup winners brought the trophy home to their country, flag-flying became more common in everyday life, not just sporting events.

The colors black, red, and gold originated during the 1840s and were used by German resistance groups fighting against Napoleon and the Conservative Order after his defeat. These colors were reintroduced in 1919 to celebrate the founding of the liberal Weimar Republic.

The Belgium Flag vs the German Flag

The Belgian flag is a vertical tricolor, with the colors in the order of black, yellow, and red. While the colors are similar, Germany’s flag has a different design and color order.
