German Flag Colors, Meaning, & History
The colors black, red, and gold originated in the 1840s and were used by German resistance groups fighting against Napoleon and the Conservative Order after his defeat. The modern flag was first adopted in 1848, during a shortlived attempt to unify the independent German states. Germany’s flag wouldn’t be used again until 1919 when it was adopted by the Weimar Republic. The German national flag was replaced in 1933 after Hitler took control of the country and was reinstituted following World War II in 1949.
The colors are derived from the Holy Roman Empire, which used a black eagle on a yellow field for the Emperor’s imperial banner. Red and white flags were flown by the Holy Roman Empire alongside the imperial banner during the Crusades, using an inverse design of England’s St. George’s Cross flag.
Belgium Flag vs German Flag
The Belgian flag is a vertical tricolor, with the colors in the order of black, yellow, and red. While the colors are similar, the German flag has a different orientation and color order.
