More About the Belgium Flag Colors

Belgium's classic tri-color flag is based on the Duchy of Brabant's flag, which created the first independent Belgian state. Although short-lived, Belgium eventually retained its independence, establishing the national flag, which has remained the same since its creation in 1831.

Since then, Belgium has emerged from the ashes of World War I & II that devastated the country to become a cultural and economic nexus of Europe. Brussels, its capital, is known as one of the most important diplomatic centers globally, as it is the headquarters for both the European Union and NATO.

The Belgian flag's vertical tri-color design was inspired by that of the flag of France. The Belgium flag's yellow, red, and black colors each represent the lion seals of several of the country's founding regions:

  • Red - Hainaut, Limburg, and Luxembourg
  • Yellow - Brabant
  • Black - Flanders and Namur

Belgium Flag vs. German Flag

Belgium's and Germany's national flags share similar colors but have different designs and meanings. Belgium's flag consists of three vertical black, yellow, and red stripes from left to right. Germany's flag features three horizontal black, red, and gold stripes from top to bottom, using colors associated with the 19th-century German liberal movement.

Flag Flying Days in Belgium

While this flag is proudly flown daily all over the world, we covered a few popular ones in our introduction. In case you were wondering, Whit Sunday (also known as Pentecost) falls on the 7th Sunday after Easter. Belgium National Day is celebrated every year on July 21, marking the day Leopold I took the oath as the first king of Belgium in 1831.

Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I, is observed yearly on November 11th by several countries, including Belgium, France, New Zealand, and Australia, to commemorate the end of World War I and honor those who served.
