Guinea Bissau Flag Meaning & History

The flag of Guinea-Bissau was first used on September 24, 1973, when the country declared independence from Portugal. The flag’s design is heavily based upon that of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, a party that pushed for decolonization efforts in the region.

Red, yellow, and green are traditionally used as Pan-African colors, inspired by their use on Ghana’s national flag. The red band on the left represents the blood shed during the fight against colonialism. The yellow stripe is for the sun, and the green is for hope. The star is known as the Black Star of Africa, symbolizing African unity.
