History & Meaning of the Honduras Flag

The history of the Honduran flag is tied very closely to the nation's history. In 1823, after declaring independence from Spanish control, several Central American countries formed a democratic republic called the United Provinces of Central America, under a triband flag of blue, white, and blue. These provinces were El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras. In 1838, the union dissolved, and the provinces became sovereign nations, yet Honduras kept the original flag design as a national symbol.

On March 7, 1866, five blue stars were added to the white stripe on the Honduran flag to represent the five original provinces. Today, it is said that the two blue stripes of the flag represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and that the white band symbolizes the land and prosperity of the Honduran people.
