Hong Kong Flag Meaning & History

The modern flag of Hong Kong was first proposed in 1990, with the final design approved in 1996 and officially adopted on April 4, 1990. This flag replaced the previous British Blue Ensign with Hong Kong’s coat of arms.

The flower on the Hong Kong flag is from the Bauhinia blakeana tree, also known as the Hong Kong orchid tree. Each petal has a red star inside, representing the five stars on the Chinese flag. The red background is also drawn from China’s flag, with red being considered a celebratory and festive color.
