Italian Ensign Flag Meaning & History
The ensign flag was adopted on November 9, 1947, and features the naval coat of arms in the center of the Italian national flag. The coat of arms consists of a shield with a crown above it. Inside the shield are four coats of arms for the maritime republics of Italy, a group of four port cities that played a significant role in Italian history. In order of appearance, these cities are Venice, Genoa, Pisa, and Amalfi.
