Macedonia Flag Meaning & History
Shortly after declaring independence in 1991 from Yugoslavia, North Macedonia adopted a red flag with a ‘Vergina Sun’ in the center, an ancient symbol that appeared in Greek art as early as 6th BCE.
However, Greece objected to the symbol’s use on the Macedonian flag and imposed an economic blockade in 1994. The Macedonian government responded by appointing Miroslav Grčev to design a similar flag, albeit with a different sun design. The current flag was officially adopted in 1995.
