The Marshall Islands Flag Meaning & History
The first unique flag of the Marshall Islands was adopted on May 1, 1979, when the country gained independence from the US-managed Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. It was created by Emlain Kabua, the First Lady of the new republic.
The rays symbolize the equator, with the white one representing the Ratak Chain of islands in the east and the orange one representing the Ralik Chain in the west. The star’s position above the rays depicts the Marshall Islands’ location in the Northern Hemisphere. The 24 points are for the number of electoral districts, and the four longer points symbolize the significant atolls of Majuro, Jal
