History and Symbolism of the Methodist Flag
The United Methodist Church has used the cross and flame imagery on the flag since 1968, after the Methodist Church and Evangelical United Brethren Church merged. The cross represents Christ, and the flame represents the Holy Spirit. The flame is composed of two tongues, symbolizing the union of the two different churches into one.
