Northern Mariana Islands Flag Meaning & History
The flag of the Northern Mariana Islands was adopted on July 1, 1985. Its dark blue background refers to the surrounding Pacific Ocean and the nearby Mariana Trench. The white star in the center represents the United States, of which the islands are a part. Behind it is a gray stone statue called a latte, symbolizing the Chamorro people, the largest ethnic group on the islands. The floral wreath stands for the Carolinians, the second-largest ethnic group.
