Papua New Guinea Flag Meaning & History

The national flag of Papua New Guinea was adopted on July 1, 1971, following a nationwide competition. Susan Karike Huhume, a 15-year-old student, created the winning design.

The background colors of red and black reflect the traditional colors used by different regional groups. The white stars on the left are the Southern Cross, representing Papua New Guinea’s location in the Southern Hemisphere. The gold bird on the left is a Raggiana bird-of-paradise, the national bird.
