Russian Flag Colors, Meaning & History

Russia’s flag was initially used as an ensign for merchant ships as far back as 1696. However, the first official flag of the Russian Empire was a tricolor of black, yellow, and white stripes used in 1858. In 1896, the white, blue, and red coloring was reinstated until 1922. Towards the end of the USSR, the tricolor was re-adopted in 1991 and added to the nation’s constitution in 1993.

During Alexander III's reign, the flag’s colors were given official meanings: White symbolized frankness, blue stood for loyalty and honesty, and red represented bravery and love.
