History & Meaning of the Russia Flag
The national flag of the Russian Federation was initially used as an ensign for merchant ships as far back as 1696. However, the first official flag of the Russian Empire was a tricolor of black, yellow, and white stripes used in 1858. In 1896, the white, blue, and red coloring we know today was reinstated.
During the reign of Alexander III, the flag’s colors were given official meanings: White symbolized frankness, blue stood for loyalty and honesty, and red represented bravery and love.
