Sao Tome and Principe Flag Meaning & History

The first and current national flag of Sao Tome and Principe was adopted on July 12, 1975, following the country’s independence from Portugal. The green stripes represent the nation’s land, while the yellow stands for the sun and the equator. The red triangle symbolizes equality and the bloodshed in the fight for independence. The two black stars are in reference to the two islands of Sao Tome and Principe. The colors of red, green, and yellow, as well as the black stars, are commonly used to represent pan-Africanism.
