St. Lucia Flag Meaning & History
The first unique flag to represent St. Lucia was adopted in 1939. The British Empire, which controlled the island, assigned it a national coat of arms. This coat of arms was added to the British Blue Ensign to create a regional flag.
In 1967, St. Lucia was granted self-rule, while foreign affairs were still managed by Great Britain. To celebrate, a new national flag was chosen, designed by painter Dunstan St Omer. The flag’s design has remained largely the same since, even after the country gained independence. It was last modified in 2002.
The blue background represents the sky, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. The black and white colors symbolize racial harmony, while the yellow stands for the sun and prosperity. The triangular design references the Pitons, two volcanic spires located on the island.
