St. Vincent and the Grenadines Flag Meaning
The first flag used to represent Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was adopted in 1877 when it was part of the British Empire. This flag was the British Blue Ensign with the regional coat of arms on the right. When the country became independent on October 27, 1979, it adopted a new, unique flag designed by local artist Elaine Liverpool. However, due to its complexity, the design was difficult to manufacture and redesigned in 1985.
The blue stripe represents the sky and sea, the yellow is for the beaches and the sun, and the green is for the land and vitality. The three green diamonds in the center are arranged in a ‘V’ shape to mimic the first letter in ‘Vincent’ and are a reference to the islands’ nickname as the ‘Jewels of the Caribbean.’
