Turkey Flag Meaning & History
Turkey’s flag has a long history, as its design is similar to that adopted by the Ottoman Empire in 1793. However, this flag had a thinner crescent moon and an eight-pointed star. The design we know today wasn’t used until 1844 when the moon's shape was changed, and the star became five-pointed instead. The design was last standardized on May 29, 1936.
The story behind the crescent moon and star on the flag comes from Osman I, who started the Ottoman Empire in the 14th century. One night, while Osman was sleeping, he dreamed that the father of the woman he wanted to marry, Sheikh Edebali, turned into a moon. When the moon went back down, a tree grew in its place, making a forest under a sky full of stars and a half moon.
