Tuvalu Flag Meaning & History
Tuvalu’s national flag was first adopted on October 1, 1978, following the country’s independence. The flag’s design is based on the British Blue Ensign but uses a light blue field instead of dark blue. The nine yellow stars represent the nine islands that make up Tuvalu and are placed according to their geographic location.
In 1995, one of the stars was removed from the flag since one of the islands was uninhabited. Additionally, Tuvalu’s name translates to English as ‘eight together’. The flag’s design was changed in 1996 to remove the Union Jack but was unpopular with the public. The original nine-star flag was readopted on April 11, 1997.
