Vietnam Flag Meaning & History

The flag of Vietnam carries deep historical significance and embodies the spirit and struggle of the Vietnamese people. First adopted in 1945, when Vietnam declared independence from France, the flag's design is simple yet profound. The red background represents the bloodshed and revolution in the fight for freedom. The large, central yellow star symbolizes the unity of the people in this struggle, with its five points representing the main groups in Vietnamese society: workers, farmers, soldiers, intellectuals, and traders.

In 1955, the flag’s design was modified to make the star smaller and change the shape of its points. This version of the flag is the one still being used today.
