Zambia Flag Meaning & History

Zambia's flag was first adopted on October 24, 1964, in celebration of its independence from the British Empire. The color of the green field and the eagle’s design were updated in 1996.

The green background represents agriculture and local vegetation. Each colored stripe in the bottom right corner has a specific meaning. The red stripe stands for the fight for independence, the black is for the people of Zambia and Africa, and the orange symbolizes copper and other natural resources.

The eagle shown above the stripes is an African fish eagle, the national bird. It represents freedom and the Zambian people overcoming national issues.
