US Army Birthday: Honoring America's Oldest Military Branch

Not only is June 14th Flag Day, but it's also the birthday of one of America's most historic institutions: the US Army! While celebrating our symbol of freedom, we also celebrate the creation of America's oldest military branch, with two and a half centuries of service.

When is the US Army’s Birthday?

The Army's birthday takes place on June 14 each year, the same day as Flag Day! 

Founding of the US Army

The Army of the USA was founded on June 14, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress decided to enlist ten companies of riflemen to serve in the Continental Army. The new Army unified former British soldiers, American militiamen, French supplies, and German officers in the war against the British Empire.

The Continental Army, led by George Washington, ultimately defeated the British. Following the war, the Army was formally disbanded, with only a few state militias remaining, and was renamed the First American Regiment and then the Regular Army.

In 1791, the US government decided to raise a standing army once more, transforming the Regular Army into the Legion of the United States. Over time, forces were added, creating the US Army we know today. 

Despite the name changes over the years, the modern American Army traces its origins to the founding of the 1775 Continental Army. Even centuries later, the Army continues to be the largest branch of the Armed Forces, consisting of proud service members who continue to make their commitment to our nation. 

How to Celebrate the Army’s Birthday

The US Army’s birthday is celebrated with a wide variety of events and ceremonies. Significant events include military tattoos, parades, wreath-laying, competitions, fireworks, and equipment presentations. Contact your local Army base or military museum to find out what events are happening near you.

When is the Army Birthday Ball?

The Army Birthday Ball is scheduled for June 14, the same day as the United States Army’s birthday. The Ball honors all past and present members of the Army with a gala, dances, and a traditional cake-cutting ceremony.
