Food and Drug Administration Flag Meaning & History
The first-ever official seal of the FDA was adopted in 2026, celebrating the 120th anniversary of the agency's founding on June 30, 1906.
According to the FDA, the 120 gold triangles along the seal’s inner rim represent the agency’s 120 years of service. Triangles are also present on the Department of Health and Human Services’ seal, the parent department of the FDA.
The white shield in the center stands for transparency and virtue and displays the Staff of Asclepius. This emblem consists of a snake coiled around a staff, which is an ancient Greek symbol of healing and medicine. The staff is atop a book, representing knowledge and the pursuit of science. Around the staff are eight blue stars, each symbolizing a product area the FDA regulates. Above the shield is a bald eagle, the national bird of the United States.
On the right side of the shield are sheaves of grain, which represent the country’s food supply and the FDA’s role in protecting it. On the left is a DNA strand, representing science and medical technology.
Below the shield is a banner bearing the FDA's Latin motto, which translates to “protecting the public health.” At the very bottom, the year “1906” refers to the year that the FDA was founded.
