Description

Our Japanese naval flag, also known as the flag of the Rising Sun, is constructed from high-quality nylon, a tough fabric built for outdoor flying. Nylon is quick to dry, recovering well after rain or contact with water. The red sun symbol and its sixteen rays are digitally printed for rich UV-resistant colors.

Each flag has a robust canvas header and brass grommets for easy attachment to any outdoor flagpole, such as a nautical pole. We offer the Japanese ensign flag in sizes 2’ x 3’, 3’ x 5’, and 4’ x 6’. Refer to our table of common flagpole heights and their recommended flag size for assistance in determining which size is right for you.

Japanese Rising Sun Flag Meaning & History

Banners bearing a red rising sun with rays were used as early as the 17th century. In 1870, the design was adopted as the national army’s war flag and later as the naval ensign in 1889.

The flag’s design represents Japan’s status as the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ since Japan is to the east of the Asian mainland and experiences sunrise earlier in the day. Symbols composed of the sun and its rays can be traced to the mid-6th century.
