Malawi Flag Meaning & History

Malawi’s first national flag was adopted on July 6, 1964, as part of gaining independence from the British Empire. The flag was temporarily replaced with a similar design from 2010 to 2012 but was reverted due to its unpopularity.

The colors black, red, and green represent Pan-Africanism, though each color also has a specific meaning. The black stripe symbolizes the people of Malawi, the red is for the bloodshed in their fight for independence, and the green is for the regional environment. The rising red sun is drawn from the national coat of arms and stands for hope and freedom.
