Maldives Flag Meaning & History
The first flag used to represent the Maldives was a simple red banner. In 1903, a black and white striped bar was added to the hoist side. The white crescent appeared on the national and state flags in 1926; however, the green rectangle was only on the state flag. The state flag’s design was later officially adopted in 1953, and the black and white stripes were removed in 1965 after the country gained independence from the British Empire.
The red symbolizes the bloodshed by the nation’s citizens to defend the country, while the green is for prosperity and peace. The white crescent represents the state religion of Islam.
