US Merchant Marine Flag Q&A
What are the Merchant Marines?
Mainly, the Merchant Marines have citizen-manned ships that assist the United States as a transportation service for goods and passengers during peacetime. Although these civilians are not a part of the military, the Merchant fleet can be an auxiliary to the United States Navy during war times. They can be called upon to deliver military personnel and material for the Armed Forces.
When was the Merchant Marine Flag created?
On May 24, 1994, Maritime Administrator Albert J. Herberger presented a flag design to pay tribute to America’s civilian seafarers who supported the US Armed Forces in the past and present in times of war and peace. This commemorative flag was first used at the annual US Merchant Marine Memorial Service in Washington DC. This event honors the thousands of merchant seamen who were killed during wartime.
