Description

Unable to lower your flag to half-staff? Not to worry: you can still express your solidarity and respect using a mourning bow. This bow attaches to the top of the flagpole above the flag, right below where a flagpole ornament might be. The mourning bow is especially ideal for flagpoles that don’t have a halyard, rope, or other way of moving the flag to a position halfway down the pole.

Mourning Bow Meaning

When a prominent individual passes away or a national tragedy occurs, the state or federal government issues a half-staff proclamation. This means the US flag should be quickly raised to the top of the flagpole and lowered halfway down. While it is not required by law for citizens to move their flags to half-staff, it is an excellent way to show respect for those who have served the US. However, many residential house-mounted flagpoles cannot have the flag lowered this way. A black mourning bow or ribbon may be used instead in this event.

Please register for our half-staff alert service to be notified of national half-staff announcements and optionally for state-wide ones.
