History of the New York Yankees and Their Iconic Logo
The Yankees weren’t always the Yankees: The team’s origin story can be traced back to 1901 when an American League baseball team named the Orioles was placed in Baltimore, Maryland. Due to disputes between the American League and the National League, the Orioles were disbanded at the end of the 1902 season, and a new team was placed in New York City in 1903. This team wasn’t called the Yankees yet, but the New York Highlanders. The nickname “Yankees” surfaced in 1904 when it was used by sports editor Jim Price but wouldn’t become the official team name until 1913. Since then, the Yankees have seen astounding successes, winning 27 World Series titles and hosting a roster full of National Baseball Hall of Fame inductees, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra.
The famous Yankees logo of the interlocking N and Y has existed since the team’s Highlander days. At first, the letters ‘N’ and ‘Y’ were printed next to each other on the team’s jerseys, but in 1909 the letters were combined into the design we know today. However, several variations exist: The ‘N’ and ‘Y’ used on the team’s caps, jerseys, and marketing all use slightly different fonts.
