Ontario Flag History & Meaning
Until 1965, the British Red Ensign with Canada’s national coat of arms served as the national and regional flags for the entire country. In 1963 and 1964, the iconic red and white maple leaf design we know today was adopted as Canada’s national flag. However, the design was unpopular at the time. To appease Ontarians unhappy with the change, the Ontario government re-adopted the British Red Ensign as the regional flag, but with the province’s coat of arms instead.
The base of the flag is the British Red Ensign, flown by civilian ships. On the right is Ontario’s coat of arms, which depicts St. George’s Cross at the top in reference to England. Below are three gold maple leaves, which represent Canada’s natural environment.
