Philadelphia Light Horse Flag Meaning & History
The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry was founded in 1774 and served during the American Revolution and as George Washington’s escort. The Troop has been in active service since 1774, making it one of the oldest active units in the US Armed Forces.
A flag representing the Troop was most likely adopted in 1774 or 1775. The design featured a yellow background on which a Continental soldier dressed as a Native American and an angel flank on either side of a shield. Above the shield is a horse’s head, symbolizing the troop’s status as a light cavalry unit. Beneath the shield is a banner with the troop’s motto, “For these we strive.” The canton would have originally featured the Union Jack, with the 13 blue and gray stripes added in 1777 in honor of the original 13 colonies.
