History & Meaning of the Quebec Flag
The provincial flag of Quebec, called the Fleurdelisé, was the first to be formally adopted by a province of Canada on January 21, 1948. Earlier French and Canadian flags heavily influence elements of this design. The Kingdom of France’s naval flags inspired the white cross motif. The other symbols were initially presented on a banner of the Virgin Mary used by the 18th-century Canadian colonial militia. On that banner, the fleurs-de-lis symbolized purity, while the blue background represented heaven.
