Sierra Leone became part of the British Empire in the early 19th century and was represented by a British Blue Ensign with the regional coat of arms. In 1960, the British College of Arms created a unique flag and coat of arms in preparation for Sierra Leone’s independence. This flag was hoisted for the first time on their independence day, April 27, 1961.

The green stripe represents agriculture and natural resources, while the white is for justice and unity. The blue stripe symbolizes the harbor of the capital city, Freetown.
