Taiwan Flag Meaning & History

The first element of Taiwan’s flag was the sun design in the canton, known as the “Blue Sky with a White Sun.” It was drawn by Lu Haodong, a resistance fighter against the Qing dynasty. Sun Yat-sen added the red field in 1906 to represent the ‘red Earth.’

The Guangzhou government first adopted this flag in mainland China on May 5, 1921. The Republic of China was relocated to the island of Taiwan in 1945 and kept the same flag. Mainland China adopted a different design that features five gold stars on a red field.
