Togo Flag Meaning & History
The current flag of Togo was adopted on April 27, 1960, to celebrate gaining independence from the French Empire. It was designed by Togolese artist Paul Ahyi. Togo’s flag is unique for being the only national flag that uses the golden ratio as part of its proportions.
Green, yellow, and red are Pan-African colors and have specific meanings on the Togolese flag. Green symbolizes agriculture and hope, yellow stands for natural resources, and red is for the bloodshed in the fight for independence. The white star in the canton represents hope. The five green and yellow stripes are in reference to Togo’s five regions: Centrale, Kara, Maritime, Plateaux, and Savanes.
