Description

This American Civil War Union flag is constructed in the USA using high-quality nylon, a weather-resistant fabric that dries quickly, helping prevent mildew growth after rain. The stars and stripes design is digitally printed for accuracy and bright, vibrant colors.

Our Union Civil War flags feature a durable canvas heading and brass grommets for easy attachment to any outdoor flagpole. This flag measures 3 feet by 5 feet, which pairs perfectly with our 6’ tangle-free flagpole.

Union Civil War Flag Meaning & History

This design was the Union flag during the Civil War, specifically, the one used during the first battle and later to raise war funds. It was flown at Fort Sumter in 1861 when Confederate forces attacked, formally beginning the war.

After Fort Sumter surrendered, the flag was shown throughout the North at patriotic rallies and “auctioned” to raise money for the war effort. Anyone who won the flag immediately donated it back for use at the next rally.

In 1865, four years after the surrender of the fort, this flag was re-raised in celebration of the Union victory.

Other Details

The 33 Star Garrison Flag that flew over Fort Sumter has been called "The flag that started a war". The stars for the Confederate states were never removed from the Union flag because the Union did not believe the states had a right to secede.
