Liberty and Union Flag Meaning & History

The Liberty and Union flag was created in 1774 by the Sons of Liberty in the town of Taunton. It was flown on a liberty pole built outside the local courthouse and later adopted as the town’s official flag.

The flag’s design is based on a British Red Ensign, commonly used by British vessels at sea. The text “Liberty and Union” was then stitched onto the fabric. It represented dissatisfaction with the colonies’ relationship with Britain while affirming loyalty to the Crown through the use of the King’s Colors.
