Description

Celebrate the founding of our nation by flying the first American flag—the Betsy Ross flag, proudly made in the USA!

Our Betsy Ross flags are manufactured using the traditional method of sewn stripes, meaning that the red and white stripes are cut and sewn together instead of printed on a single sheet of fabric. Additionally, the colors in our Betsy Ross flags are printed using UV-resistant inks to help prevent fading and sun damage from outdoor exposure.

We offer the original Betsy Ross flag in nylon and cotton. Read more below to determine which option best suits your setup. Both options have a robust canvas header and brass grommets for simple attachment to any standard outdoor flagpole.

Nylon Betsy Ross Flag

Nylon is our general-use option since it is a durable and lightweight fabric built for outdoor flying. Nylon’s lightness allows it to fly regally in gentle breezes, and dries quickly after becoming wet to help prevent mildew growth.

Our nylon Betsy Ross flag is available in sizes 2’ x 3’, 3’ x 5’, 4’ x 6’, and 5’ x 8’. Find out which flag size best suits your pole with our flag pole size chart

Cotton Betsy Ross Flag

For a more authentic, vintage look, we also offer the Betsy Ross flag in 100% cotton, the same material that the original flags would have been made of! Please note that since cotton is a natural fabric, it will wear down faster than nylon due to environmental conditions and weather effects. The cotton flag is available in the size 3’ by 5’, an excellent match for our best-selling 6’ tangle-free flagpole

Note: To help preserve your cotton flags' appearance, we recommend displaying them indoors or taking them down during inclement weather. Check out our blog for more flag care tips

Betsy Ross Flag Meaning and History

Since the turn of the 20th century, the original Betsy Ross flag, also known as the 13-star American flag, has come to embody American patriotism perhaps more than any other flag. And it’s easy to see why: the legend of Betsy Ross and the flag of the 13 colonies is about as American as it gets.

As the story goes, Betsy Ross was a seamstress working in Philadelphia, already well-known in revolutionary circles for her tents, uniforms, and flags. When the Founding Fathers needed a flag to represent the colonies in Congress, they came to her with their design. Thus, the first American flag, sewn by Betsy Ross and featuring the iconic stars and stripes design, came into being. However, she made one simple but crucial change: she took the stars from six points down to five, making them easier to sew.

Although this legend has since been refuted and is likely an embellishment of history, it remains an endearing story woven into the fabric of American lore. Today, the Betsy Ross flag is one of the most famous and distinctive US flags—a true classic and essential for any patriotic American collector.

When it comes to design, the Betsy Ross flag is quintessential Americana. A circle of thirteen five-pointed stars, brightly contrasted against a royal blue backdrop, represents each of the thirteen original colonies. Stars were chosen to represent “the new constellation” of America, along with thirteen red and white “rebellious stripes.” These stripes were a direct callback to the Sons of Liberty flag, flown by revolutionaries in Boston and Philadelphia.
