El Salvador Flag Meaning & History

El Salvador’s flag was adopted on May 27, 1912, based on a previous design with nine blue and white stripes. The blue stripes represent the Pacific and Pacific Oceans and El Salvador’s history of cultivating indigo dye. The white stripe stands for peace and unity.

The central coat of arms, surrounded by the five flags of the Federal Republic of Central America, emphasizes El Salvador's history as a member of the Federation. Inside the triangle are five volcanoes representing El Salvador and the other members of the Federation: Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
