History & Meaning of the Green Mountain Boys Flag
This flag was initially used by the Green Mountain Boys, a militia that was organized in 1770 in the region between the British provinces of New York and New Hampshire, to prevent New York from taking control. This area would later become the Vermont Republic, joining the Union as the 14th state on March 4, 1791. The Green Mountain Boys also fought as a regiment during the American Revolutionary War. Today, the flag is used as a regimental flag by the Vermont National Guard.
The green coloring of the flag was chosen to represent Vermont’s natural landscapes, while the 13 stars symbolize the original American colonies.
