KENTUCKY STATE FLAG HISTORY & MEANING
The Commonwealth of Kentucky became the 15th state to join the United States in 1792, though its flag was not finalized until 1963. Its original basis was designed by art teacher Jesse Cox Burgess and adopted by the Kentucky legislature in 1918.
Burgess’ original flag featured Kentucky’s state seal, and text reading “1792”, referring to the year when Kentucky joined the Union. The seal and the flag were updated to their current look in 1963, standardizing its appearance to avoid any confusion.
The seal itself is said to feature the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone, who was largely responsible for the exploration of Kentucky’s territory, and Henry Clay, Kentucky’s most famous politician. The seal was designed by artist and Kentucky politician Nan Gorman and features Kentucky’s motto, "United we stand, divided we fall".
Sprigs of goldenrod, Kentucky’s state flower, were added beneath the state seal to tie together Kentucky’s government and nature.
