Micronesia Flag Meaning & History
From 1947 to 1994, the Federated States of Micronesia were part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which also included Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. In 1962, a blue flag with six white stars in a circle was adopted to represent all the territories. Shortly before Micronesia’s independence, a new flag was adopted based on this design. It is also blue with four white stars, symbolizing the regions of Yap, Truk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, which were split from Pohnpei.
The blue background of the flag represents the Pacific Ocean and was inspired by the United Nations flag, which refers to Micronesia’s history as a UN Trust Territory.
