Netherlands Flag Meaning & History
The current design of the Dutch flag can be traced back to the 16th century. In 1575, the first national flag of the Netherlands featured an almost identical tricolor design. However, the topmost stripe was orange instead, replaced with red in 1596. The Dutch flag is one of the oldest tricolor flags in the world, inspiring other similar flags like those of France and Russia. The current Netherlands flag’s design was finalized when its colors were standardized in 1949.
Fly your Netherlands flag on public holidays, like King's Day (April 27), at half-staff for Remembrance of the Dead (May 4), and jubilantly on Liberation Day (May 5).
