The currently existing government of the Netherlands, which means "Lower Countries" due to its shallow elevation, has only existed since Napoleon's defeat in 1815. Like most European countries, the earliest recorded history of the Netherlands can be traced back to the Romans; its people were firmly rooted in the Middle Ages.

The Netherlands evolved into a significant trading power throughout the Age of Exploration and the Renaissance. It became a major center of trade and commerce throughout the period, up to and beyond the 1500s.

The current design of the Dutch flag can be traced back to the 15th century. In 1575, the first national flag of the Netherlands featured an almost identical tricolor band. However, the orange in that flag was replaced with red in 1596. The Dutch tricolor-banded flag is one of the oldest such flags, inspiring other similar flags like France and Russia. The current Netherlands flag was finalized when its colors were standardized in 1949.

Fly your Netherlands flag on public holidays, like King's Day (April 27), at half-staff for Remembrance of the Dead (May 4), and jubilantly on Liberation Day (May 5).
