Rhode Island State Flag Facts
The anchor symbol and “Hope” motto have been used on Rhode Island’s state seal as early as the 1640s. In 1897, this seal was officially adopted as part of the flag of Rhode Island, along with the addition of thirteen gold stars. These stars represent the original Thirteen Colonies of the US and Rhode Island’s history as the thirteenth state to ratify the Constitution.
