Description

Stand out from your neighbors by flying the banner that inspired Rhode Island’s modern state flag! This flag was used by the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment, a force of volunteers that served during the Siege of Boston at the beginning of the Revolutionary War.

Our 2nd Rhode Island Regiment flag is proudly manufactured in the United States from nylon, a tough material built for outdoor display. The canton and anchor design is digitally printed for precise details and bold colors. The inks used in the printing process are fade-resistant, which helps prevent sun damage.

These Regiment flags come equipped with a strong canvas header and two brass grommets for quick installation on any standard outdoor flagpole. We offer the 2nd Rhode Island Regiment flag in the size 3’ x 5’, which many of our customers choose to fly on our 6’ tangle-free flagpole

Rhode Island Regiment Flag History

This flag was based on the banner of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, which used the same white background and star-filled canton but with a different blue seal on the right. The newer flag was designed for the 2nd Regiment, which was formed in May 1775 from volunteers who would go on to drive the British out during the Siege of Boston. The 2nd Regiment also fought in New York and New Jersey and later joined the 1st Regiment near Philadelphia.

The current state flag of Rhode Island is heavily based on this design, using the same white background, text, anchor and star symbols, and blue and yellow coloring. The anchor is a reference to Rhode Island’s history as a central port, surrounded by a banner reading “HOPE.” The 13 yellow stars in the blue canton, which represent the original Thirteen Colonies, were moved to surround the anchor in the modern design.

Other Details

Although tradition claims that the Rhode Islanders were among the first to join the Minutemen outside of Boston, and the Rhode Island regiments served at the Battles of Brandywine Creek and Trenton, the regiments were not formed until 1781. They most certainly were at Yorktown and remained active until the end of the Revolution. The starry canton in the flag of the Rhode Island Regiment symbolized national unity, but the white field corresponded to the uniforms of the Rhode Island troops. The anchor symbol and motto which completed the design had been used as a government symbol since 1647 and is carried in the current state flag.
